On this third day of the Summer school we had a look into the metadata management of the Library and the Collections and discovered the challenges of cataloguing in the case of duplicates (two editions or copies of the same book), old theses in the thesis collections (some of them were handwritten!) and the soft wares that are used for metadata and cataloguing, such as Alma.
We also looked into and brainstormed about a very challenging project: the Paolozzi Mosaics Project. This project aims to display recovered pieces of Paolozzi's mosaics that decorated the walls of the Tottenham Court Road Station in London. Because Paolozzi was an alumni of the Edinburgh College of Art, the University bought pieces of mosaic. The challenge here is that many of the pieces were lost during the removal of the mosaic surface from the tube station and the pieces that were not destroyed could not be displayed easily.
So our job was to brainstorm how we could display it and the idea of our group was to repurpose the mosaic surface and create a new artwork, while others suggested to reconstruct the entire mosaic and fill the gaps with for instance digital projection, which I found also quite interesting.
